People’s Choice Ride — Sunday 23th October

The next ride organised by The Squeaky Wheel is on this Sunday…

Put the public in public art and join the People’s Choice ride of the MoreArt Trail.

Taking in all of the exhibition sites, selected artists will be on hand to describe or perform their works. The ride will conclude at The Brunswick Green with a ceremony awarding the $1000 prize for the People’s Choice Award. Voting prize of $200 also up for grabs. Enjoy a complimentary drink for riders on arrival! It’s a win-win-win.

Meeting Point: From 12pm at Lux Foundry Café, 21 Hope St Brunswick, (departing 12.35pm)

The Squeaky Wheel is organising some bike tours of the City of Moreland MoreArt Public Art show, and would love you – as Moreland’s cycling representatives – to be involved.

Spring Fashion Ride – Wednesday 12 October

Mark the end of ride to work day in style with a leisurely ride along the MoreArt Trail. Don your favourite spring frock or pull out your finest regalia for a downhill coast celebrating the creative spine of the municipality. After taking in the Artland exhibition of student works at RMIT, the ride will finish up at The Brunswick Green, with a complimentary drink for riders on arrival. Pimms and lemonade anyone?

Meeting Point: Gowrie Station at 4pm

Tour Ends: Group will arrive at Brunswick Green, 313 Sydney Rd at 6pm

The ride will head off down the Western Ring trail from the Westmeadows Bakery at 9.00am sharp.

We will turn right before Pipeworks and proceed down Merri Creek toward Rushall Station. Here we divert toward the Yarra. At Burnley Street we will detour to the Swap-Meet in Abbotsford. Afterwards we will continue on to Southbank, Docklands and return via the Moonee Ponds Creek. All up we should travel approximately 67km along relatively flat bike paths. Enjoy stunning vistas along the Merri Creek, Riviera of Melbourne’s north and the majestic splendour of the grand old Yarra.

The Teddy Bear’s Picnic Ride is on this Saturday

The Teddy Bear’s Picnic Ride is on this Saturday (March 19).

Meeting point: 11:30am at CERES Café (Lee Street, Brunswick East). The ride departs CERES at 12 noon.

Description: Bring a bike, picnic goodies, good weather and a teddy bear mascot. We will ride 5 km at a meandering pace from CERES to Coburg Lake via the Merri Creek Trail and enjoy a picnic by the lake.

Ride to Work is a behaviour change program coordinated through Bicycle Victoria that encourages workers to feel good and have fun by commuting to work by bike and experiencing the health, financial and environmental benefits of riding. Ride to Work Day will be held on Wednesday 13 October 2010.

The next BUG ride: Lilydale to Warburton

The next Moreland BUG ride is scheduled for the 13th and 14th of March and we will ride the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail!

The distance is 38 km each way. The rail is mainly flat and there are lot’s of stops along the way (a gentle rise over Mt Evelyn – trains don’t climb so well eh). We plan to stay overnight in Warburton and ride back to Lilydale on the next day. They have a lovely campsite in Warburton, right next to the Yarra River. Cabins are also available and there are a few Bed & Breakfasts in Warburton.

We will meet at Flinders St Station at Platform 3 (where the last 2 carriages will stop) at 9.00 am to catch the 9.10 am train to Lilydale. This should leave plenty of time for a lovely relaxing day.

Or you could met us at the Lilydale Railway Station at 10.15 am.

The BUG Rides are back!

Hello Buggies,

Finally, the rides are back! After quite some time without any BUG rides we managed to get them back on track.

The first ride for this year is scheduled for February 14th and will go to the Studley Park Boathouse.

We will have two departing points:

We will depart from O’ Heas Street Bakery at 9.30 am. From there we will go to the Noise Bar in Brunswick to pick up additional riders. We would expect to leave the Noise Bar by approx 9.45 am.

The next stop is the Studley Park Boathouse for refreshments.

This is a leisurely ride and suitable for families. The distance is about 30 km return.

Don’t forget to bring water bottles, sunscreen, a puncture repair kit and some money.

The Crosskeys Cruisers – Strathmore – Friday rides

The Crosskeys Cruisers are a group of retired men and women who meet in the Crosskeys CarPark near the Strathmore station at 9am on Friday mornings.
The rides are decided each Friday and the adventure begins. Some riders go till morning tea while others ride till lunch and then home at about 3pm. New members most welcome to chat and share the experience.

One more sleep till the Fawkner Festival! Should be a bit of fun.

If anyone would like to ride together in a suitably relaxed manner, Bill has organised a ride from outside the Railway Hotel (a.k.a. ‘Noise Bar’, located where the Upfield Shared Path crosses Albert Street, MEL 29 G8) at 9:30am (Sunday, November 15).

Bill has factored in oodles of time, to suit all riders, kids etc. Hope to see you there!

Fawkner Festival Sun 15th Nov – volunteers needed

The Fawkner Festival is being held on Sunday 15th November this year between 11am and 4pm at Mooma Park, McBryde Street, Fawkner.

The Fawkner Festival is a community festival with music, stalls, food, children’s activities and rides. The Festival is organised by a committee of residents and representatives of local community groups.

The Moreland Bicycle Users Group is intending on holding a stall at the event and require volunteers to help out. We need people to help set up, at least two people at the stall at any one time and people to help pack up the stall. If you could volunteer two hours of your time to help out at the stall or help set up or pack up, please email Phuong with options of your preferred shifts.

Volunteer shifts:
10:30-12:30 – set up & stall
12:30-2:30pm – stall
2:30pm-4:30pm – stall & pack up

Also, there have been suggestions of organising a bike ride from the southern parts of Moreland to the event and also the possibility of organising valet bicycle parking. If anyone is keen to take on any of these, please get in touch with Phuong ASAP!

Ride to Work day

Wednesday 14 October 2009 is National Ride to Work Day, a day to celebrate cycling.

Across Australia, work places and community groups will host Ride to Work Day breakfasts to reward people who choose the healthy commute.

Last year Moreland City Council hosted a community breakfast in Victoria Mall which attracted around 100 cyclists. This year is going to be even bigger with community breakfasts in three locations across Moreland.

1. Capital City Trail: Velo Bike Hub – Cnr Nicholson Street and Capital City Trail

If you head down Nicholson Street or the back streets of Brunswick East, be sure to stop at the breakfast by Moreland City Council and Velo Bike Hub on the Capital City Trail, just near the intersection of Nicholson Street.

Stop for a muffin and coffee and chat to Council staff or one of the friendly Velo Bike Hub crew.

Over 700 cyclists pass through the Capital City Trail and Nicholson Street intersection on their way to work each day so this breakfast is bound to be a big one.

2. Commuter Cycles: 14 Prentice Street, Brunswick

If you live in Brunswick and head down the Upfield path to get to work, the closest breakfast site is at Commuter Cycles, on Prentice Street between Victoria and Albert Streets, just behind Brunswick Railway station.

Enjoy breakfast, chat to the staff about upcoming bike events and have your bike looked at by one of their mechanics.

If you need to leave your bike for a full service, ask about one of their courtesy bikes.

3. Victoria Mall, Coburg

If you live in Coburg or head down the Upfield path north of Bell Street, visit the main Council breakfast site in Victoria Mall.

We’ll be serving up a healthy breakfast and expect around 100 cyclists to stop, enjoy a pastry, fruit and a cup of coffee.

Come chat to Council staff about how we can improve cycling in your area. We are particularly interested in what Council can do to help encourage cycling in the northern parts of the municipality and want to include your suggestions as part of the Moreland Bike Plan Review
