Dechene Bridge reopened

News from Nicholas Elliot at Moreland Council:

Just a quick note to let you know that the De Chene Reserve Bridge that was damaged in the Xmas Day flash flood, has been reopened for pedestrians and cyclists. Cross with Care. The damaged hand rail will be repaired on Monday (Jan 23rd) – until then barricade tape has been placed across the gap.

The other bridge that was damaged, in the Edgars Creek park land near Ronald Street, will remain closed until it has been repaired. Repairs will start next week.

Moreland BUG December get-together

Moreland BUG gets a mention in Parliament

Christine Campbell, the MLA for Pascoe Vale, attended the AGM on Thursday night. Among the items that she talked about was an acknowledgement she gave the BUG, Council and individuals who have worked on various bike infrastructure projects within Moreland.

Moreland Bicycle User Group

Ms CAMPBELL (Pascoe Vale) — Congratulations to the Moreland Bicycle User Group (BUG) for its great work in promoting healthy and clean-energy transport. Its work assists all Moreland cyclists, from those for whom it is their principal transport to those who enjoy being recreational cyclists. Its website and email communication keeps everyone informed of current and future events. Thanks to Julia Mischke, whose emails keep us informed, and to all those at the Moreland BUG committee for their commitment. Thanks to those who work at Moreland City Council and dovetail in with local cyclists, particularly the infrastructure team headed by Nerina di Lorenzo, who has completed the ‘shovel ready’ plan for the final link of the Upfield shared pathway. Thanks to Sebastian Motta, whose work has addressed safety width and beautification around the Western Ring Road, which has been widened. When partnership, hard work and a comparatively small amount of funding all combine, sustainable and healthy cycling transport occurs.

The next big project is the Craigieburn rail corridor bike path, which is the next project for the Moreland BUG. The Moreland BUG, Moreland City Council and the Department of Transport all require action to bring this great idea to fruition. Because of the work by Moreland
City Council’s infrastructure team, detailed designs are available for Department of Transport staff when they are ready to action a rail corridor project. Congratulations to Cr Kathleen Matthews-Ward, whose vision and persistence taught us that it was possible, and to Paul McKay and Rod Overall, who showed up the pitfalls and solutions.

Tree pruning works alongside Merri Creek path this week

If you ride along the Merri Creek Trail in East Brunswick please be aware of the following works.

Contractors will be pruning trees near the ACES facility in East Brunswick (between CERES and Albion Street – Melways 30 B6).

The contractors will be pruning trees to remove dead wood and improve tree structure. The works seek to address branches overhanging the ACES facility and the Merri Creek Path.

Most of the works will be away from the path but there will be times when the contractors require vehicle access to the path to remove timber and branches.

The works area will be clearly signed and contractors have agreed to avoid obstructing the path during peak times to minimise disruption to regular path users.

It is expected the works will commence on Monday 17th October (Today) and take about 1 week to complete. This estimate is dependent on good weather.

Volunteers needed for new bicycle recycling and repair project (in Broadmeadows)

News from north of the border…

Banksia Gardens Community Centre in Broadmeadows is seeking enthusiastic community members to form a small sociable volunteer team to establish a bicycle recycling and repair hub.

The Broadmeadows Bicycle Hub is a volunteer-run bicycle recycling and repair centre. As well as teaching and supporting local residents to repair and maintain their own bicycles, it will also recycle old bikes and sell them at heavily discounted prices. The aim is promote cycling in the Broadmeadows community to provide more access and mobility options as well as healthier lifestyles.The initiative will rely on forming a small sociable volunteer team to manage and run the hub.

Full training will be given and ongoing support will be provided by the CERES Bike Shed and Banksia Gardens Community Centre. We will be hosting a Volunteer Information Evening on Wednesday 9th November from 6:30-8pm at Banskia Gardens Community Centre (71-81 Pearcedale Parade, Broadmeadows). We will provide food and drink on the evening as well. Everyone welcome.

Ride to Work day

Ride to Work Day is on Wednesday the 12th of October 2011.

To acknowledge the day, Moreland City Council is hosting a Ride to Work Day community breakfast in Victoria Mall, Coburg (Melways 29, H1) between 7:30 and 9:00 am on the day.

If your commute to work doesn’t get you past Victoria Mall, check out the BV website to find a Ride to Work Day breakfast near you.

And don’t forget to register at https://ride2work.com.au/rtw/. One lucky registrant can win a signed and framed Cadel Evans BMC jersey as a reward!

The Moreland BUG’s Annual General Meeting is coming up and will be held on Thursday the 27th of October 2011 at the Edinburgh Castle Hotel (681 Sydney Road, Brunswick).

The meeting starts at 7.30 pm and will finish around 9.00 pm.

The ordinary business of the Annual General Meeting is:

Confirm the minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting
Present the financial report
Elect the new Committee of Management
Other business

All BUG members (which includes all subscribers to this email list) are welcome to consider nominating for a position on the BUG committee.

Check your bike lights this weekend – its the end of daylight savings

This weekend marks the end of daylight savings.
It will be getting darker earlier, which means your ride home from work will soon be in twilight or at night.
When the clocks go back, its time to put the bike lights on.

This weekend is an ideal time to do a quick check to see if you are ready to ride at night.

Do you have front and back lights?
Do they work?
Are they still bright after they’ve been on for a few minutes? – An LED light with flat batteries will start out bright but quickly fade.
Do you have reflectors?

To meet road rules for riding at night your bike will need to have bright front and rear light visible from 200m and a rear reflector.
If your bike lights aren’t up to scratch and new batteries don’t do the trick … its time to pop into your local bike shop and get some new lights.

To make it easy, Moreland City Council, in partnership with Avanti Superstore (Brunswick), Lygon Cycles, Rays Bicycles (Brunswick), Commuter Cycles, and Velo Cycles is offering you a huge 20% off selected bike lights during the month of April in the ‘Clocks Back, Lights On” bike lights promotion.

Simply print out the attached voucher and take it to a participating bike shop to claim your discount.

It’s also a good idea to wear bright clothing when you ride to make it easier for other road users to see you.
I keep a hi-viz vest in my pannier and pop it on over my day clothes when I ride home, but there are many more stylish options. When you’re at the bike shop have a look at the range of fashionable reflective wristbands or trouser cuffs.

The Teddy Bear’s Picnic Ride is on this Saturday

The Teddy Bear’s Picnic Ride is on this Saturday (March 19).

Meeting point: 11:30am at CERES Café (Lee Street, Brunswick East). The ride departs CERES at 12 noon.

Description: Bring a bike, picnic goodies, good weather and a teddy bear mascot. We will ride 5 km at a meandering pace from CERES to Coburg Lake via the Merri Creek Trail and enjoy a picnic by the lake.

Works along Upfield Bike Path – cnr Park St & Upfield path

In case you haven’t already noticed, there are works happening along the Upfield Bike path at the corner of Park Street and the Upfield path on the north side along the shared path. Works commenced at some point yesterday and is still in progress.

Please take care when travelling through this area as there is only enough space for one cyclist or pedestrian to pass at a time.

Moving Green – Sustainable transport Ideas Competition

Moonee Ponds Creek path closure

Part of Moonee Ponds Creek Shared Path near Strathmore Primary School will be closed from 21 February to end of May 2011 to improve the path.

The alternative route for walkers and cyclists will be the Strathnaver Reserve Access Road, Mascoma Street and Odin Street. Please refer to the
Moonee Ponds Creek Shared Path Detour Route Map (PDF).

Please be advised this route is also shared with motorists and is busy at the start and end of the school day, approximately 8:30 to 9 am and 3:15 to 3:45.

Bike path at Dights Falls closed

For anyone using the Merri Creek or Capital City trail near Dights Falls:

Cyclists and pedestrians should be aware that the bike path between Dights Falls and Turner Street in Abbotsford will be closed until early next week.

Increased river flows which covered the riverside path after heavy rains have recently subsided, leaving behind significant amounts of debris.

The bike path has been blocked in a number of places by fallen trees, branches and even a stray boat.

Work began to start clearing the path on Friday 11 February.

The path is expected to be closed until early next week.

Other sections of the bike path along the Merri Creek and Yarra River, while not closed, are heavily covered with silt and mud so cyclists and pedestrians should be mindful of the slippery conditions.

Upfield Path detour – up to 12 weeks

Apologies for the late posting of this detour news!

There will be a road closure at the intersection of Bakers Road and the Upfield Railway line in North Coburg (Melway 17 G8). Cyclists using the bike path will be detoured around the site.

Duration: Melbourne Water advises the works could last up to 12 weeks

Start: 5 November 2010

Council regrets the late notice. Council was only informed that the works would be going ahead 2 weeks ago. The late notice is due to coordination issues with the rail operator and/or VicTrack.

Route Detour – Upfield Path at Munro Street Coburg

News from Nicholas Elliot at Moreland Council:

Building works on the corner of Munro Street and Railway Place are going to force cyclists to detour.

The detour route is the same as has occurred already, via the lane on the east side of Railway Place.
Detour should be signed and staffed – it won’t operate all day, just during concrete pours.

Dates:
Wednesday 17 November to Wednesday 15 December 2010.
